Blur - Self Titled

It's no secret that alternative rock is probably my favorite genre. When I look back on the 'good old days' and hear all these great tracks, it makes me wonder what has happened to music today. Take a band like Blur for example - you may only know one song from these guys, but that song was pretty awesome. When you heard 'Song 2' anytime in the mid 90's, if you were pumped up about it - you needed to check your pulse. Blur started in 1989 or so under the band name of Seymour. They were focused heavily on more of a BritPop sound back then, which doesn't really jive with the sound this album created. They were pretty huge in the UK though before the rock style turn. In fact, Brits kind of turned their backs on Blur because of the transition. Oh yeah, they also moved to the United States when they reinvented their sound. To demonstrate that point, they released an album called, 'Parklife' in 1994 that is 4x platinum in the UK. This album - in spite of having a rockin' single like 'Song 2', is only platinum over there. They enjoy a different sound across the pond than we do here. Anyway, the front man of this group is Damon Albarn. You might recognize that name, from the million times of talked about how much I love his side projects. (Both Gorillaz and Good, Bad, and The Queen) I think this album is cool. If you'd force my feet to the fire and ask me if I'd buy it, I probably wouldn't - but it's a fun listen. It's very different than what else was out there in the '97 era. For that reason, it's very worth a listen. Blur is back to making music and might be dropping something soon. They've released a few fun singles - but nothing serious yet. Hopefully soon!
