Song of the Moment

J. Cole - Lost Ones

Friday, April 16, 2010

"Yes Pete, it is. In fact, it's pronounced 'mill-e-wah-que' which is Algonquin for 'the good land'."

It's Friday. It's the day after tax day. I grew up during the time. I think it's the best decade for movies. I think it's the best decade for music. The other lists I've seen are terrible.

How many reasons do you want? Wait, you probably don't even know what the post is about yet. Well, the day is finally here B Siders!! I've assembled a list of the Top 100 songs in the '90s!! Here is a quick key as to how I came to my Top 100:

Weighting:
50% - How Much I Enjoy It
25% - Repeatability
10% - Made Artist Blow Up
10% - Cultural Influence
10% - Popularity
-5% - One Hit Wonders

As you can see, being a one hit wonder will count against you here. Not that it matters too much with me, as if I really like it - it'll be on the list. The other rule is you can only have ONE track per artist. I think that makes the list more valid, as otherwise someone like me will have all alt rock and rap artists 1-100. As always, comment on how stupid my list it or how brilliant I am. I think it turned out pretty well! Oh, and now I want to watch Wayne's World again... Here it goes!

First, the list of tracks that didn't quite make it: (in alphabetical order)

  1. UGH!!! I am so disappointed in you! As the self-appointed country "buff" I am so upset with this list. I knew Country would not have many tracks, but COME ON! Achy Breaky Heart?!?!?! You messed up big time! Garth Brooks, Brooks and Dunn, Shania Twain and Alan Jackson peaked in the 90's (even Dixie Chicks even broke out) and had WAAAAAY better music that that song! Even though I like the song... it is not worthy of being the only country song in there!

  2. I know, I'm sorry. I thought about that yesterday - I've been putting this together for almost a week now.

I had Shania Twain on my list, but I honestly couldn't find a song that I knew. I probably should have put a Garth Brooks song on there - that was a bad omission on my part. The only Dixie Chicks song I know is when the covered Landslide, and I wouldn't have had any idea off the top of my head it was 90's.

Achy Breaky Heart made the list strictly because you couldn't go anywhere without hearing it forever. I don't care much for it now, but if you tried to stop me from singing in 1992 you were in trouble.

  3. I'm amused that Kris Kross - Jump is on the list. I'm also annoyed that you've omitted Warren G & Nate Dogg - Regulate. Boo. Thank you for not having Nirvana at #1.

  4. WOW!!! Huge omission on my part. I totally missed Regulate! =(

Rest assured had that song not slipped my mind, it would have been there! Thanks for the comment!

  5. -Dave Matthews?
    -Coolio?
    -Boys II Men?
    -Meatloaf?
    -Wilson Phillips?
    -Bryan Adams?
    -New Kids on the Block?

    and... the biggest OMIT:
    -Michael Jackson? Black or White?

  6. I actually had an even bigger omission that I caught myself. This is EXACTLY what I needed. I'm going to make a few revisions. Check back in 30 minutes!

  7. Revisions completed. There was more updates than I thought there would be. But I TOTALLY missed a song that's now in the Top 5.

    Check it out!

  8. I'm a little disappointed that Boombastic got bumped, that's my "at kick" song for kickball! But the list sounds much better now! :)

  9. It was really tough to boot Shaggy - but after having to fit others in, I realized that I honestly have not listened to that song in a few years.

How could I forget Everlong?? Seriously one of my favorite songs of all time.

  10. -i can't believe you picked 'pawn shop' for your sublime choice.
-i can't believe you picked 'thirty three' instead of 'tonight tonight' or something from siamese dream.
-thank you for not picking 'enter sandman.'
-'gettin' jiggy with it' does NOT belong on this list.
-i probably would've picked a different tupac selection, "i get around" or "california love."
-and i wouldn't have picked it now, but i did wear out the cassette tape single of 'gangster's paradise.' but i think 'fantastic voyage' is better. and i would have picked 'tennessee' instead of 'mr wendal.'
-joan osbourne? no. replace with the gin blossoms.
    -thumbs up for 'would?'
-i can't believe you even considered CONSIDERED 'rico suave.'
-almost was going to note the absence of 'when i come around,' but then i quadruple checked and found it. same for cake. you lucked out, buddy.
-however, you are missing some serious primus. and NIN, wtf.
    -and 'water's edge.'
-i don't care if it is a one hit wonder, 'get what you give' should be in the top half because it is one of the greatest songs ever.
    -two words: 'possum kingdom.'
    -ok two more: EPIC FAIL.

  11. I suppose I'll respond in order:

Pawn Shop is an amazing song. Easily my favorite.

I was close to picking Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness...I love the piano. I find myself singing Thirty Three a lot.

    Enter Sandman is overrated.

Big Willie Style all in it...What can I say, I enjoy that song.

California Love was also good. Hail Mary is great. Could have gone with Got My Mind Made Up as well.

Gangsters Paradise was such an impact heavy song back in the day.

I like those two AD tracks about the same. A game of horseshoes!!!

Not a fan of Gin Blossoms. But I probably would have put that on the Honorable Mention list.

    Would is amazing.

    Considered is a strong word.

Green Day and Cake are great.

I probably should have put Closer on the list. I do love that song. Wouldn't and still wouldn't put Primus.

I would have put Cumbersome over Waters Edge, and that is an omission.

That song sucks. It will never be in my top anything unless it's worst songs ever.

Possum Kingdom is awesome too. Probably should have made it. I Come From The Water is awesome too.

Epic Fail? Come on. I think I did a pretty good job. Are you really saying it was bad, or just being snarky?

  12. I like most of these songs so I think it was a good list.

  13. Thank you Shelley!

Both for the comment and the feedback!

  14. excellent job on the list...i would have made some different song choices for some of the bands you chose...but i know how you are with picking the "popular" songs...

oh and by the way... 4 words. TOAD THE WET SPROCKET.

  15. I chose my favorite songs by the artists. I guess 'Bullet With Butterfly Wings' or '1979' would have been the "popular" Pumpkins tunes of the 90's, but I think they're worse songs. Just because the masses enjoy it, doesn't mean it's better than other songs on the same album.

As I mentioned to someone else, I spent about a week, and it easily could have taken a month. This debate could go on forever I think. But that's simply a testament to how great the decade was.

  18. Man, I'm so glad I checked this post out. Some tracks are listed that I haven't thought to blast around the house in a while.
