Marilyn Manson - Antichrist Superstar

Ahh Manson. What a strange fella. I can't say I ever got super into his music, but I did listen to this record quite a bit in the mid 90's. I can always recall Manson getting so much flack from the public for turning sweet innocent kids into animals. Does that stuff still happen? I mean, when the tragedy that was Columbine happened, I remember everyone blamed Manson, Eminem etc instead of you know - the relative that gave them guns, or the parents for not really caring, or the doctors for putting them on medications that didn't interact well together. Since I work in my box and blog about music and music only - I have no clue what the general public has to say about controversial music anymore. Maybe they've gotten to be more accepting. One can hope anyway. Regardless, Manson put out some pretty crazy and rockin tunes in his day. This album is a little heavy in spots, and is about as metal as it gets back in '96. I put him right up there with showmen like David Bowie and even Garth Brooks when he did that stupid pretend to be Chris Gaines thing. Manson also writes ALL of his own stuff, which is an accomplishment in and of itself. I won't tell you that you have to be a metal fan to enjoy this. It's different, and you might like that. It's not the greatest album of all time, but it's neat. Check it out as a follow up to DMB!

  1. i was introduced to manson with this album, but i think i prefer his later album "mechanical animals". not sure exactly why, but maybe because it was the record of choice during chemistry class. nothing like listening to manson while you're trying not to blow things up!

  2. Animals was good too. I think I liked this one just a bit more even though I did enjoy The Dope Show. I think the great songs on Superstar for some reason are just better than the great songs on Animals. Similar records though. I'll have to review that one in the near future!

  3. went to see manson in november - right before he fell ill to the swine flu - and he was terrible. i'm glad i paid 'free' for the show. however, i think 'the beautiful people' is one of the greatest metal songs ever.

  4. Agreed. Beautiful People rocks it. I'm not sure I'd want to see him live. I guess I've never heard anyone rave about his shows.
